How We Test & Review Products

Our multi-pillar evaluation framework for assessing supplement formulations, scientific backing, purity, and overall value.

Methodology Overview

Wellumeโ€™s product evaluations are based on objective formulation analysis, scientific literature review, brand transparency verification, and consumer usability assessments. We do not accept payment from manufacturers for positive scores or favorable verdicts.

1. The Four Evaluation Pillars

Every product reviewed or featured in our buying guides and comparisons is evaluated against four consistent, objective criteria:

Pillar 1: Ingredient Formulation & Clinical Dosages

We inspect the complete supplement facts panel to verify whether active compounds match effective dosages demonstrated in peer-reviewed human trials:

  • Bioavailability & Chemical Forms: We examine whether the product uses bioavailable, well-researched forms (e.g., Magnesium Glycinate vs. Magnesium Oxide, Methylated B-vitamins, trademarked extracts).
  • Dosage Adequacy: We verify whether individual active ingredients reach clinically validated thresholds rather than token "fairy dusting."
  • Proprietary Blends: We penalize formulations that obscure individual ingredient quantities behind proprietary matrices without clinical justification.

Pillar 2: Third-Party Testing & Purity Verification

Safety and purity are critical in the supplement industry. We verify manufacturing practices and certifications:

  • Independent Laboratory Testing: We look for third-party certifications from accredited verification bodies, such as USP, NSF International, BSCG, or Informed-Choice.
  • Certificates of Analysis (COA): We prioritize brands that readily provide batch-specific COAs verifying potency and screening for heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic) and microbiological contaminants.
  • Facility Standards: We confirm whether manufacturing takes place in current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) certified and FDA-registered facilities.

Pillar 3: Brand Transparency & Ethics

We investigate the company behind the formulation:

  • Sourcing Transparency: Does the brand disclose where raw botanicals and active compounds are harvested and synthesized?
  • Marketing Integrity: Does the company make exaggerated, misleading, or non-compliant disease claims?
  • Customer Policies: We review money-back guarantees, return conditions, customer support accessibility, and subscription transparency.

Pillar 4: Value & Usability

A premium formulation must deliver genuine value relative to its cost:

  • Cost-Per-Serving: We calculate the actual cost per effective daily serving rather than simply comparing package sticker prices.
  • Format & Delivery: We consider serving size (number of capsules required daily), swallowability, taste (for powders and liquids), and allergen exclusions.

2. Editorial Ratings & Verdicts

Our overall editorial ratings (on a 1.0 to 5.0 scale) represent a composite evaluation across our four criteria:

  • 4.5 โ€“ 5.0 (Exceptional): Industry-leading formulation with clinical dosages, accredited third-party testing, complete transparency, and excellent value.
  • 3.5 โ€“ 4.4 (Good / Recommended): High-quality formulation with strong ingredients and safe manufacturing, with minor trade-offs in price or blend clarity.
  • 2.5 โ€“ 3.4 (Fair / Average): Usable product, but hindered by lower dosages, less bioavailable forms, or premium pricing that exceeds its formulation quality.
  • Below 2.5 (Not Recommended): Underdosed, heavily obscured proprietary blends, lack of purity testing, or non-compliant marketing claims.

3. Pros, Cons & Audience Caveats

No single supplement is universally suitable for every individual. Every Wellume review explicitly highlights:

  • Key Strengths: What the product does well based on its formulation and clinical evidence.
  • Considerations & Trade-offs: Potential downsides, cost considerations, or missing complementary nutrients.
  • Audience Suitability: Who will benefit most from this product, and who should avoid it or consult a doctor before use.
